Im about to buy a small holding, should I consider buying a gun for security?

Well I live in a really rural area and we've gone out for target practice so many times i couldn't even count. You can fire your gun on your land, but you can't hunt unless its in that appropriate hunting season. I don't know where you are buying but crime in a rural area? Crime rates are higher in urban settings than rural ones. My house has never been the victim of crime. We do have an alarm system but its never been set off (unless the neighbor fired at a bird, missed, and hit my bedroom window). Unless you're expecting cowboys and indians to attack I don't see the necessity of a gun. However, for fun, they're always fun to lock load and fire ;)
