Economically, what do rural communities have to offer?

Especially low income rural communities. I'm evaluating rural vs urban education resources...rural lacks a lot but they have less of a population so gov and organizations can't invest in something they won't reap any benefit from. So I'm wondering what rural communities have to offer.
