Indian stone/rock gets rid of body hair.. permanently?

my friend told me that her mum's friend who is indian has never had exessive hair as a teenager onwards because her mom made her rub this type of stone or something against her body daily in circular motions. we donit know the name of this and are trying to figure out, and cannot ask the lady as her mum does not talk to her anymore. any suggestions? its apparently something w=very common in asia to use for beauty purposes
